Project Greenlight Picks Top 250
Amateur Filmmakers and Their Original Scripts One Step Closer to the Big Screen
Los Angeles, CA – December 5, 2000 -- Project Greenlight, a first-of-its-kind venture from Miramax Films & TV, HBO and LivePlanet, today announced its screenplay contest – entered by more than 10,000 people - has been whittled down to 250 scripts. Members of the Project Greenlight community, both contestants and registered reviewers, have evaluated each script at least three times, and their reviews helped narrow the contestant pool. The top 250 entrants are posted on the Project Greenlight site (www.projectgreenlight.com) today.
The next phase of the contest requires each individual contestant or team to submit a three-minute filmmaker's video to Project Greenlight. The filmmaker's videos will be judged on each contestant's personal qualities—such as demonstrated leadership, vision, talent, and creativity—and will help to determine which contestants will make it to the "Top 30," to be announced January 6, 2001. The winning screenplay will be selected March 15, 2001.
Project Greenlight, the largest active screenwriting community in the world, invited amateur screenwriters, aged 18 years and older, to submit their original screenplays electronically to www.projectgreenlight.com from September 25 through November 4. Miramax has committed to providing the winning contestant or team with a $1 million production budget, and to hire them to direct the film, which will be executive produced by Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Chris Moore. Further, Miramax guarantees distribution of the film in theatres. At the same time, Miramax Television will chronicle the making of the movie in a 13-episode documentary series, slated to air on HBO in early 2002 - taking an insider's look into the movie-making process.
