Again, I'm sorry I haven't had time to check in as much as I thought I would. It's just 6am to midnight has been crazy, but I am not complaining for a second. Directing this movie is the most fun I have ever had

Hate to sound so boring but the cast and crew are outstanding. I know reading about confrontations and people fighting is more fun than this Kumbaya stuff, but from the studio down to the pa's, things have been great. By the way, pa's, I don't consider you the bottom of the food chain.

Bonnie Hunt is the most perfect Margaret O'Malley and is easily the crew favorite. No slight on Aidan or Kevin, but she's funny and good looking. Kevin has people in hysterics with his impressions and he has this twinkle in his eye that says I'm thinking something really funny. Aidan, well, Aidan's got these ice blue eyes that make all of the women and a lot of the men pant. And he will sit and talk to anybody forever. Why? Cause he's Irish and from Chicago.

The kids, Adi and Mike, are naturals. The more they work, the better they get.

When Brian Dennehy came on set, I couldn't help thinking it's Tommy Boy's Dad. This unbelivevably talented actor and all I kept thinking was how great he was as Chris Farley's dad. I saw the dailies on dennehy and I wish I was a smarter writer so I could get him in the movie longer.

Biagi, who is the Director of Photography, is the man. I really wish I could say I knew what he was doing, but i can't start lying now. I had breakfast with him for a whole week before we started shooting, told him my vision of the script, and the man is shooting the most beautiful movie. The crew that he assembled just fly and they do it as if this hard work is fun.

I hate to sound like ronald Reagan, but I swear my job directing a movie with this cast and crew is a joke. They allow me the courtesy of saying "action" and "cut" but everything they do before action, during action, and after cut is all them.

But I'm telling you, the way I scream "action" and "cut", forget about it. I vary the tone and volume and really and truly, my ability to shout these two terms is improving with every passing day.

Hope everyone is doing well and I'll check in later.

Pete,

Thanks for the 5 days worth of fun. It was great watching you work. Walking into the Chery Pit coffee shop kind of summed it all up for me. Biagi is truelly the man! Whatching him run around pointing and getting things goin where they need to go is such an instpiration. Chicago crews seem to have it goin on. Thanks once again for allowing me to be in your world for a bit. Keep up the good work petie.

All the best,

psichick,

I know you are a sweetie and you mean well but PLEEEEEEZE don't address any comments directly to billhays in this thread of all threads because you will only give him ammunition to keep running his yap about how he knows better than Pete how to do Pete's story.

I'm begging everybody else who visits this thread to at least put billhays on symbolic "ignore" and do not respond to him no matter what he says.

If he doesn't have anybody to play ball with, maybe he will go away and not take over Pete's own thread and turn it into a multi-page diatribe.

WE NOW RETURN CONTROL OF THIS THREAD BACK TO PETE WHO IS DA MAN!!!

No, I do not know that.

I think that Pete's script had a serious problem. His main character decided to embark on a Holy Quest to convert a jewish person to Catholicism, and then the rabbi smiled and allowed his own son to be recruited into a contest so he could earn his right to take part in a Catholic sacrament.

If you know anything about the current state of Jewish-Catholic interfaith dialogue, I think you would realize this kind of prosletizing would be offensive to the Jewish side.

The jews have their own religion. they feel they do not need any help from Catholics, or have to participate in any kind of a contest to earn the right to share in a Catholic sacrament.

I made one suggestion. There is a Jewish organization in LA called the Simon Wiesenthal Center. They have won two Oscars for documentaries they've produced about the Holocaust. i suggested that Pete run his script by them for an opinion before he started filming. I see nothing wrong with that suggestion.

If Pete isn't willing to submit his script about a Jewish rabbi who loses his son to a Jewish organization that has won two Oscars for movies they wrote and produced, how are we supposed to offer any kind of constructive criticism about ANY script in this contest?

_____________

I have a response, but i won't make it.

What I see here is a problem with Ms. Uhuru.

She has a religious faith that I have offended, and of course, no one has the right to offend HER beliefs.

but Pete has the right to be offensive toward jewish beliefs by expaining why they need to be converted to Catholicism before the Creator of the universe will allow them to go to heaven.

I know you can't see this, but the bigotry in your post is very apparent.

Ben was talking about Pearl Harbor in a chat room at yahoo:

Q: Did you meet with any Pearl Harbor survivors?

BEN AFFLECK: We had survivors on the set almost every day. They were extremely helpful. We couldn't have made the movie without them and... one of the reasons I wanted to do this movie is because it was about something larger than me, larger than just a movie. i hope people respect it as a gesture of gratitude...

So, as I read this, Ben saw a lot of positive feedback from having the people actually involved in pearl harbor on the set and offering opinions and suggestions. I suggested that Pete do the same thing by getting some critical feedback from some highly respected jewish rabbi with impeccable film credentials. and you think I was being offensive to Pete by making that suggestion?

Try living in the real world for a change.

_____________

This is the message I read from pete. he said that he wished he could get Brian Dennehy in the movie longer.

Okay, HOW would you do that?

Remember, this is an indie film with a one million dollar budget. You have the people sit in front of the camera and talk about their feelings more than Hollywood movies.

So, HOW would you get Dennehy to sit in front of the camera and talk?

Here's my suggestion. Set up a simple set that looks like the inside of a confessional. have Dennehy sit down and pull the camera in close. then have people come up to the other side of the window and give their confessions. he doesn't know who they are or what they are going to say. Do this for half an hour and see if you get any good stuff. if something hits, you could run it behind the opening credits. Or, put it in the movie to give more background on little Pete, to see what the priest does before he comes in.

If you have a specific problem with this suggestion, if you like it or don't like it for some reason, feel free to make an adult, responsible comment on it. But your comment that i am insulting Pete by offering this suggestion is complete nonsense.

Also, because of what Pete said about Aidan having eyes that fascinate women, I thought that his wife of many years might have suspicions about him cheating on her.

I don't know what Pete's mother would say in confession. I think it would be a chance to surprise the audience by giving some insights into her character, and also explain exactly what Catholics do in confession to non-Catholics.

And, of course, some of little Pete's friends might give phony confessions and laugh. That was the South Park episode last week, where Cartman decided to become an evangelist because he coud make a lot of money at it. Didn't respect the institution. That was my point, that it wouldn't hurt to show the Jewish establishment that you have respect for their opinions.

I remember Dennehy from "arthur". he was the bartender when Dudley Moore picked Bo Derek up in the bar. It was the same kind of reaction scene, only to Moore's musings rather than a confession, but it just struck me that Dennehy would be good at this because he did it great in "arthur."

Golly gee, if only billie boy COULD FREAKIN' READ, he would know that I'm Jewish.

Poor Pete. I knew his nice little thread here where we all get to share in his experience of making his own movie would not get left alone by billie.

If billie wants to rant on about how he knows better than Pete how to do Pete's story, he should just make his own thread for that.

Leave this thread alone.

Uhuru,
Ah, The World According to Bill.

can you imagine if bill was an attorney that you hired. He never knows where the file is let alone - if he gets into court - he won't remember what the facts were of your case.
This guy should be disbarred. You and Bill posted about your being Jewish long time ago and he can't remember.

I'm not sure if he has a mental problem or if he is just so FILLED WITH ANGER, HATRED, JEALOUSY, BITTERNESS, RESENTMENT, OR HE IS THE DEVIL that I just am no longer curious.
Cuz I already used him as a character in my psychological drama script.

AURIC WRONGFOOT needs to go put the pedal to the medal and drive the wife's car around some more.....if she'll let him. hee hee.

Bill Hays still can't find LIVE CHAT Uhuru.
And we have 2 more people reading RILEY WINS.
I'm gonna ask Ben to read it next

Okay, here's the latest.

Everyone on the crew has to prepare a "confession" for Dennehy. They come up on the other side of a partition so he doesn't know who they are. I think Matt and Ben should be limited to 1 hour or 100 sins, whichever comes first.

In the movie, Bonnie worries that her husband is cheating. More than that, she sees the priest as a man in conspiracy with her husband to keep it a secret. This is because the priest hears confession from Adian Quinn's character and when or if the guy cheats, he confesses the sin to the priest. So Bonnie KNOWs that Dennehy KNOWS whether her husband has confessed cheating or not, and she wants him to tell her, but he won't.

Then, when Quinn's character comes in for HIS confession, we're already curious. Is he going to confess a sin or not? Is Dennehy part of a conspiracy to keep silent the cheating by Mike that he knows about but can't reveal? Or does Mike only pretend to be interested in other women because he thinks it keeps his wife on her toes? From what Pete said about Quinn's blue eyes, he would have women trying to come up to him in bars, not the other way around. And Bonnie would have seen this, no matter how much she trusts him.

This is just a suggestion to delve more deplyinto who these people are, to let the sudience see their inner thoughts and concerns, without trying to change Pete's vision of their characters in any way.

I truly wish I had the opportunity to make a comment about Pearl Harbor script before the movie was made.

I think the bombing, which lasted two hours, should have lasted at least an hour of a twohour movie. Having the actual attack last onlythirty minutes of a three-hour movie doesn't make any sense to me.

This is disgusting. This is/was Pete's thread. It should only be about Pete sharing his movie-making experiences.

IT IS TOO LATE TO ENTIRELY RESTRUCTURE THE STORY, BILLIE, SINCE PRINCIPAL PHOTOGRAPHY HAS BEEN WELL UNDER WAY FOR SOME TIME.

THERE IS NOTHING THAT YOU CAN DO, BILLIE, TO STOP PETE FROM MAKING HIS MOVIE.

GET OVER IT.

Billie, if you really really want to do this diatribe bit, please, out of consideration for the entire PGL community that wants to come here and HEAR FROM PETE, could you please start up your own thread for this stuff?? Please?

BILL HAYS,
Okay, you have to wait a few minutes before
the chatter list appears and then you scroll down and pick a color from the color box and you'll be in. If you have trouble with that
go over to Tech Support and post to them and ask for their help.

You might even get a chance to talk to Ben Billy cuz I've been there twice now and he's chatted with us. So you're missing out.
And that would make my time here at PGL worth it to get to see you chat with Ben and Matt.

Pickel,

You know I am a nice person and I try to help as many people as possible here and everywhere else, too. And chances are, if I'd met billie early on in this contest before he showed his true colors, I might have been his biggest support here, trying to help him knock his story into an actual screenplay.

And you also know I'm not a big fan of how PGL allowed a wonderful concept to deteriorate into what it did become. I know that pisses off people who adore all things PGL, but those are my genuine feelings and I mention them here so that no one can say I'm just being a "defender of the faith" or a PGL groupie when I say this next thing:

I CAN'T STAND FREAKIN' RUDENESS!!!! It pisses me off no end.

This was Pete's thread. PETE'S THREAD. I don't know Pete, I've seen his appearance on Jay Leno and seen his posts here and I am convinced he was definitely one of the top PERSONS that PGL could have chosen to win this contest.

I have criticisms, too, of his script. BUT BIG FUCKING DEAL!!! The man won. Let him have his moment of glory and enjoy the hell out of this experience.

WE, THE PGL COMMUNITY, WANT TO ENJOY THAT EXPERIENCE WITH HIM AND IT IS JUST FUCKING RUDE FOR BILLIE TO CLUTTER THIS THREAD UP WITH HIS BULLSHIT.

Billie obviously does not care what any of the rest of us want.

You can critique a script in a thread that you start. You can whine and moan about PGL in a thread that you start. You can say WHATEVER in a thread that you start. But goddamit, billie, this is NOT YOUR FUCKING THREAD!!!!!

This thread belongs to Pete and to all of us. If we are interested in reading billie's literary genius, we will visit any thread that he starts.

But it is UNFAIR IN THE EXTREME to now have more than half a page in PETE'S THREAD devoted to one person's CRAP.

It's rude, is what it is.

Go away, billie, if you are not here to enjoy Pete's experience with him. PLEASE, JUST GO AWAY.

PEACE,
uhuru1701

I know Pete is having the time of his life and I am thrilled for him and I know he's laughing his ass off over this billie crap.

But the thing is, a lot of us are enjoying the "PGL Dream" through Pete and whatever he posts here whenever he has time and is generous enough to do so, and it is really mean-spirited of billie to take that away from the rest of us.

I love hearing from Pete. I want to see what he has to say.

I just hate to see anyone(i.e. Bill) ruin that experience, in any way, for the rest of us that are trying to do the same. You have misunderstood my selfishness at posts to bill hays. I'm not bothered by him nor is Pete. As for me, I've been working on a new screenplay and it's a psychological drama. I've been able to get information for one of my characters because of bill hays.

Yes, he has his quirky ways and beliefs, but he is also very good practice for anyone that thinks becoming successful in this industry is easy. There are a lot of bill hays type people out there ready to tear you down and it's just a matter of being able to know thyself and stand in truth. Then hire a good attorney and enjoy the rewards baby

good point, and if i did that, I'm sorry and apologize.

On the other hand, I was truly concerned that if a protest against anti-Semitic aspects of this movie started, there would not be a contest next year. So, I posted my concerns on a private message board under the subject "schmooze with Pete" so he would be aware that there are people out there who are offended by certain things in the media. The protest over the "B.C." easter comic strip is the best example of what I meant. The LA Times did not publish the strip because of the protest, partly because the Simon Wiesenthal Center is in LA and for the local paper to run the strip would have cut the heart out of all such protests in the future.

The Greenlight Forums are a place for Contestants, Reviewers, and Members to interact. We hope that you enjoy the community. Please remember, however, that use of the Forums (and use of the greenlight Site in general) is subject to the greenlight Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. In addition, while we're glad to see greenlighters pitching in to support each other, please remember that the posts you see here (whether about Submissions, the Official Rules, or other topics) represent the views of individual visitors, and do not represent Project Greenlight's views or opinions. For the final word on the Official Rules, read the Official Rules! You can also find helpful information in the Frequently Asked Questions area of the Site.
