The Project Greenlight Contest Process
Phase 1: Narrowing down 7,000 screenplays to get the Top 250 contestants
During a four-week submission phase beginning in September 2000, Project Greenlight electronically received more than 7,000 original script entries through its website. Using a three-script review process, both contestants and registered PGL reviewers narrowed the contestant pool down to 250 screenplays. View the Top 250.

Phase 2: The Top 250 tapered down to the Top 30 contestants
During the next phase of the contest, the Top 250 were asked to shoot a three-minute home video to demonstrate their directorial abilities as well as to convey more about themselves, their cinematic vision and their desire to be a filmmaker. After hours of video viewing, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Chris Moore, and executives from LivePlanet and Miramax narrowed the field from 250 to 30 contestants. View the Top 30.

Phase 3: From the Top 30 to the Top 10
The Top 30 screenplays were then read and evaluated by Miramax and LivePlanet executives, and ten finalists were named. Each Top 10 finalist received an Independent Filmmaker's prize package worth more than $8,000 dollars, provided by Avid Technology, Inc. The prize included Avid Xpress DV 1.5 software for digital video editing, DVD delivery and web streaming with 12 months of Avid Xpress DV telephone support, a Sony TRV 20 DV camera, and a Dell Precision Workstation 220. Utilizing their new digital camera and editing software, each Top 10 contestant was asked to shoot a three-minute scene from his or her submitted screenplay. View the Top 10.

Phase 4: Going from the Top 10 to the Top 3
Project Greenlight flew the Top 10 contestants to Los Angeles to see their shorts premiered at the Project Greenlight Top Ten Event and to hear the announcement of the Top 3 finalists by Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Chris Moore.

Phase 5: Picking the winner
Following a rigorous three-day interview process with Matt, Ben, and the Executive Producers from LivePlanet and Miramax, Pete Jones was selected as the winner of the Project Greenlight Contest for his screenplay "Stolen Summer." Pete was awarded a $1 million production budget and a guaranteed theatrical release from Miramax. Read "Stolen Summer" and the rest of the Top 10 scripts.
