LivePlanet, Miramax Films, and HBO are thrilled to offer Version 2.0 of the Project Greenlight Contest.
For the some 10,000 of you who submitted screenplays over a year ago, welcome back. If you are new to our site, you are in for an exciting opportunity. Over the next few months, PGL will be conducting an extensive contest, in search of one unproduced, feature-length screenplay, and one amateur director.
Like the original experiment, Project Greenlight will choose a feature screenplay from submissions by amateur screenwriters, to be produced by LivePlanet and Miramax Films.
This year Project Greenlight introduces a Director Contest, conducted simultaneously with the Screenplay Contest. Amateur directors will submit a sample of their best work, and Project Greenlight will choose the best director.
The Winning Director will helm the production of the Winning Screenplay.
Miramax Films has guaranteed a $1 million budget for the film.
Screenplay Contest
Once you have registered and accepted the Participation Agreement, you will be eligible to participate in the Screenplay Contest.
Once the Submission Period begins (please see the Timeline
for official start and end dates of all contest periods), eligible Contestants should proceed to the Screenplay Contest homepage to submit their screenplay.
Contestants may enter as many screenplays as they wish, provided each screenplay meets contest requirements, and the Contestant is willing to pay the $30 submission fee per submission. Contestants may also submit one or more screenplays on their own, as well as one or more screenplays with Team Members. When you begin the submission process for a screenplay, the first step is the filling-out of the Screenplay Information Form. You choose to designate Teammates on this form. A Screenwriter Team may consist of up to three members (The Team Captain and up to two other members).
Screenplay Submissions will not be accepted after the close of the Submission Period.
Contestants who enter a screenplay will be required to review other Contestants' materials. Per submitted screenplay, a Contestant is required to review a minimum of four (4) screenplays and two (2) scenes during the Round 1 Review Period. That is, if a contestant makes two Screenplay Submissions, that Contestant is required to review a minimum of eight (8) screenplays and four (4) scenes, etc, etc.
Please see the Timeline for official start and end dates of the Round 1 Review Period.
If you fail to complete the requisite review requirements your entry or entries will be disqualified.
Once the Round 1 Review Period ends, Project Greenlight will tabulate reviews for all submitted screenplays. The Top 250 Screenplays will be selected, and the Contestants whose screenplays have advanced will be notified by email.
At this point, the Top 250 Contestants will be required to complete further reviews during Round 2 Review Period. The Top 250 Contestants are required to review three (3) additional screenplays during this second Review Period. Again, failure to do so will disqualify your screenplay from contention.
At the close of the Round 2 Review Period, Project Greenlight will tabulate all reviews for this round, and announce the Top 50 Screenplays. Those Contestants in the Top 50 will be notified by email, and will have their User Names posted on the web site.
The 50 Contestants will be asked to submit a Screenwriter Video, a three-minute video that introduces you, the filmmaker, to the Review Committee (The Review Committee is comprised of executives from LivePlanet and Miramax). General parameters for the Screenwriter Video will be provided to the Top 50 Contestants.
At this point in the Screenplay Contest, a committee made up of LivePlanet and Miramax executives will read the Top 50 Screenplays. The Review Committee will narrow the Top 50 Screenplays down to the Top 10 Screenplays.
Once the Top 10 Screenplay Finalists are determined, each Top 10 Contestant or Contestant Team will be flown out to New York, Los Angeles or Park City, Utah. Interviews will be conducted, and the Committee will determine a winner based on a number of criteria, including, but not limited to: the quality of the screenplay, the impression gathered by the interviewers, and the ability to produce the screenplay at or near the $1 million budget marker.
Please see the Timeline for the official Screenplay Winner announcement date.
Director Contest
The first annual Director Contest will happen simultaneously with the Screenplay Contest. The winner will helm the production of the Winning Screenplay from the Screenplay Contest.
The premise is simple. If you fancy yourself a director, prepare a short movie or scene no more than three minutes in length. You may also submit an existing sample of your work, but it must fit within the contest parameters. As long as the material is not pornographic or illegal, directors may be as creative and inventive as they like, bearing in mind that this three-minute scene will be your opportunity to impress a jury of your peers with your ability to direct a feature film.
The premise may be simple, but the level of commitment that we are asking of our contestants is not. Directing a feature film is a full-time, sometimes thankless, often challenging job. Project Greenlight is looking for someone whose love for the craft is matched by their willingness to pour their heart and energy into the process. We recognize that we are asking a great deal from our Director Contestants, but we believe it is a means of finding an individual who is as passionate about filmmaking as we are.
Once you have registered and accepted the Participation Agreement, you will be eligible to participate in the Director Contest.
The Submission Period for the Director Contest will begin on the same day as the Screenplay Contest (please see the Timeline for official start and end dates of all contest periods). Eligible contestants should proceed to the Director Contest homepage, and follow the prompts to submit their scene. Scenes are required to be submitted as a digital file in QuickTime((r)) format only, and may not exceed three minutes in length or 10MB in file size.
Contestants may enter as many scenes as they wish, provided each scene meets contest requirements, and the Contestant is willing to pay the $30 submission fee per submission. Contestants may submit one or more scenes on their own, as well as one or more scenes with Team Members. When you begin the submission process for a scene, the first step is the filling-out of the Screenplay Information Form. You choose to designate Teammates on this form. A Director Team may consist of up to three members (The Team Captain and up to two other members).
Scene Submissions will not be accepted once the Submission Period ends.
As with the Screenplay Contest, Contestants in the Director Contest are required to review other Contestants' materials. For each Scene Submission, Director Contestants are required to review four (4) scenes and two (2) screenplays per Scene Submission, over the course of the Scene Review Period (refer to Timeline). A Contestant's failure to completely review the required materials will result in the disqualification of some or all of that Contestant's Scene Submissions.
Once the Scene Review Period ends, Project Greenlight will tabulate reviews for all submitted scenes. The Top 250 Scenes will be selected, and the Contestants whose scenes have advanced will be notified by email. Additionally, the User Names of the Top 250 Director Contestants will be posted on the web site.
The 250 Director Contestants will be asked to submit a Filmmaker Video, a three-minute video that introduces you, the filmmaker, to the Review Committee (The Review Committee is comprised of executives from LivePlanet and Miramax). General parameters for the Filmmaker Video will be provided to the Top 250 Contestants.
The Review Committee will review each Filmmaker Video, taking into consideration a number of criteria, including creativity, originality, and visual innovation. Based on the Filmmaker Videos, the Committee will select the Top 50 Directors. These Top 50 Director Contestants will be notified of their advancement by email.
Following the selection of the Top 50 Directors, the Review Committee will then judge both the Filmmaker Video and the Director Scene as a collective submission to determine the Top 10 Directors.
Once the Top 10 Directors are determined, each Top 10 Contestant or Contestant Team will be required to read the Top 10 Screenplays (from the Screenplay Contest), and submit brief coverage on each one. Additionally, each finalist will be given an identical, original scene, provided by Project Greenlight. Each remaining Director Contestant will be asked to direct this scene, and submit his or her VHS tape or Mini-DV via mail, on or before the given deadline. Coverage on the Top 10 Screenplays is also due on or before the deadline (refer to Timeline).
The Committee will then consider (including but not limited to) the Scene Submission, the Filmmaker Video, the coverage of the Top 10 Screenplays, and the Top 10 Scene Assignment to determine the Top 3 Directors. These Top 3 Director Finalists will be flown to Los Angeles, New York or Park City, Utah to be interviewed by the Review Committee. The Committee will then make its final decision.
Understandably, many of you will have technical and practical questions in the weeks leading up to the start of the contest. We invite you to visit our Help section, or the Message Boards and Chat to pick the brains of our valued Community Members.
If you plan to be a Contestant in either contest, be sure to carefully read the Official Rules and the technical requirements around the submission material. Screenplays or scenes that do not entirely adhere to all requirements are subject to disqualification.
Reviewers Only
Anyone who registers and accepts the Participation Agreement, but does not submit material into either contest, will be considered a Reviewer.
Reviewers may read, watch, and rate as many Screenplay Submissions and Scene Submissions as he or she wishes, up to a maximum of 15 each per Review Period.
Once the Review Period begins, Reviewers should proceed to the Screenplay Contest or Director Contest homepages to request screenplays or scenes to review.
From these pages, you will be able to request a screenplay or a scene to read/view and review. Once you make this request, you will be able to select a screenplay or scene from a choice of at least two.
Once you have read the screenplay or viewed the scene, you will proceed to the Review Form. The first part of the form will ask a series of True/False Verification Questions, designed to verify that you have, in fact, read or viewed the material. You will be required to answer a minimum number of these questions correctly in order to proceed with your review.
Reviewers must complete one review at a time.
