misterorange Member	posted 10-03-2000 08:16 AM This could get redundant, but for topics sake, let's just begin a little thread about what (you think) the winning story will be about. I mean genre. Will it be a comedy? A Sci-Fi Epic? A drama? A crime-story? What types of movies do you think can be made with a million bucks? A million bucks isn't much when you start counting out the costs, so what is possible? As for the 'my opinion' part, I think a comedy will be the winner. Something witty and quickly shot with as few locations as possible. I'm sure I'll be proven wrong a hundred times over, but just my $.02 Evan www.misterorange.com IP: Logged

Stone Rose Member	posted 10-03-2000 08:50 AM Of course, anything could happen. But my gut feeling is it will be something pretty creative that transcends genre. For instance, American Beauty could be described as a satire, a comedy and a drama. And it was definitely original. I think that's what'll get it. It'll definitely have to be something very creative to cope with the low budget, but considering how many people will be entering this contest, I think the winning screenplay will be something very powerful. (Either supremely funny or illuminating.) At least I hope. IP: Logged
wedge78 Member	posted 10-03-2000 09:50 AM I think a script from any genre can win. Cube was a low budget sci-fi movie. Clerks was a dirt cheap comedy. I just hope the judges realize that some scripts can be made for under a million bucks even if it doesn't seem like it on paper. IP: Logged
chazztuna Junior Member	posted 10-03-2000 09:58 AM I think the winner will have to have something that sets it apart from the pack. A million isn't much to do anything in depth like a long drawn out thriller with subplots, or a sci-fi epic with alot of special effects, and comedians (good ones) have a high price tag. So something with a surprise twist at the end (like mine) will probably pull an audience without costing a lot to produce. I'm not saying mine will win, but I wrote mine with a build to a surprise movie-type ending because I think that's the only thing that will inexpensively hold the attention of the audience. Trunks Junior Member	posted 10-04-2000 01:16 AM I'm of the opinion that even a sci-fi screenplay, if written properly and creatively, can be accomplished under budget. As I've been contemplating how to go about this, I've realized that... Miramax is looking for a gritty, indie-looking film, right? This could easily apply to doing a sci-fi film in a "retro" style. (Or ANY type of high-FX film, for that matter...) If you're careful not to sequence a bunch of battles in really improbable locations, cut down on vehicular sequences, and try to limit locations, you can pull off a lot of really great stuff on a really low budget. Think Star Trek, or Doctor Who. Also, if you're like me, and martial arts action is your thing, think Kung Fu or Enter the Dragon. The location and effects budgets on such productions are generally fairly low, and still managed to accomplish quite a lot. Also, it may just be me, but I think a nostalgic, 70s-ish look for a 00s movie would be a nice approach. But then, I know jack about movie making, so I could just be talking out my rear. IP: Logged
