Future contests. It seems as though there are hints throughout this webpage that there will be one, or many, though there is nothing definitive that I have found. As a humble reviewer on this first go-around who would be interested in entering a later contest(I felt that I'd want to make something of quality that I put myself into as opposed to cranking out a script just for the sake of it) I am curious regarding this. So what's up...

I agree....I wanted to start mine last week but I didn't....I decided that i wanted to be a part of this and see what type of scripts people write...just to get some ideas on what to do and what not to do.....but I have been thinking about this screenplay in my mind for awhile...I would love to be able to submit it....in the meantime..I am a reviewer 2!

I noticed hints to future contests as well. I have one in the works, but didn't want to scrap it together just to hit the deadline for the contest. Like you, I figured this would be a good way to see what's going on out there.

I hope there will be another one, i'm pretty annoyed that you have to be 18, and i'm only 17 (yep, turning 18 in late NOV!! how much does that suck??) Anyways guess we'll just have to wait and see, i doubt they'll say anything about a next one till this ones over, i mean this whole project could end up a flop, and then they definatley won't do it again.

I agree with all of you. I would like to know for sure if there will be more contests. I have many ideas for screenplays, but the one I would like to submit I have not started until recently. I would prefer to take my time with it instead of rushing to meet this deadline, especially since I am fairly new at script writing.

I surely hope there'll be another contest, with the succulant extra added bonus that residents from outside the States are allowed into the battle.

Since I'm from the Netherlands I can only read this messageboard at Greenlight. And I've got a script ready and waiting on my desk...

Better get this over quick. There are people in line, you know...

but if they don't have another one and you don't submit you'll be kicking yourself in the butt. ;-)

I'm submitting -- big words considering I haven't found anyone to help me write it yet..

this may be my only shot so I'm not waiting. ;-)

best wishes to everyone!

Actually, I'm not going to think that way. Even if I could pump out a script in the next 20 days or so that was okay, it wouldn't be up to the quality that I'd want it to. I'd feel worse submitting something I didn't truly love than I would submitting nothing and praying for "next time." I really hope there's a script in the midst of all of this stuff which is truly inspired and loved. I hope there are many...

if some people need to look at others work to get ideas of what to and not to do then maybe your idea isn't good enough. You have to belive in YOUR story! Then tell it to the world.

I, too, considered banging out a screenplay in such a short time. What really stood in my way is that I have little experience writing screenplays. I'm kicking myself for not taking a screenwriting class long ago. Plus, I really can't put my life on hold to devote 24/7 to writing -- which I imagine is what I would have to do to have it be something worth putting my name on.

I, too, had my doubts before. I wanted to write a novel, but felt that would be incompatible with the rest of my life: ie, earning a living at various drudgery like work, plus eating, sleeping 4+ hours a day, etc. But I learned one very important lesson: I should have started LOOOONG ago! I'm glad that I did take the time to write when I did, and was able to find time lots of places - commuting to work, sitting in front of the tube, even during meals - to jot down an idea or two. Then I made sure I wrote for a couple of hours here, an entire Saturday there - and in three short years (*snicker*) I had a finished novel.
Screenplays (IMHO) are much easier. You have an idea, which probably includes a beginning, a middle and (hopefully) a great ending that ties it all up. You probably also already have the main characters in mind, what they look and sound like, even some background in their lives before your film starts.
Now, an average screenplay runs around 100-120 pages, with half of that just empty space. So, 60 pages is your target for real type on the page. Doesn't seem that tough, now does it?
My humble recommendation: write down the major scenes you picture in your mind. Budget pages (which should equal minutes of the movie) for those major scenes. Try to create logical links to get from scene to scene: Joe and Mary drive off together into the desert, but where did they get the car? Is it borrowed, stolen or rented? Did they say goodbye to their families, or did they just take it on the lam?
Once yoiu've connected your main scenes with pre-scenes and post-scene ideas, then it's time to just hammer out dialogue and action bits. Keep notepad and paper handy at all times. My best ideas come at the oddest times - in the shower, at 3:15 am, taking a left turn into the Target - and I always try to write down those ideas as soon as they arrive, lest they drift away like smoke.
And like smoke, I must drift away myself...
Good luck to you. You'll find the greatest reward to writing is not in winning contests nor even in getting paid for your work, but in looking back at your finished work and saying, "I did this."

If there IS a next time, you might have some other excuse for nothing to submit. Quit complaining and work on it... finally.

If we all get together and make this a big hit, in the box office and the web site. You know other studios will follow in Greenlight's step.
So lets have some fun!!!!

Just a quick thought. If this is successful, and judging by the number of responses it will be, there will be ten times as many screenplays submitted for the next contest.

It's just like survivor, a couple of thousand entrants the first time but ten times that the second time. Thankly, the increase in contestants will eliminate people like Susan from being shown on TV every week (Man, was she annoying).

Your chances are better now. So start writing and good luck.

Lots of different opinions have been expressed in the posts above, but remember the cardinal rule- don't put your name on anything you can't be proud of. Submission just to submit is degrading to yourself and just clogs up the system. Read some of the posts on the other message boards and you'll see there's lots of scripts that were NOT ready but people sent anyway. If you can bang out something in 20 days and say, "Wow!" then more power to you. But if you come down to the deadline, and you bypass that final proofread or spellcheck or fudge the industry standards then you've cheated yourself and those required to read your script. DO GREAT WORK, THEN SUBMIT!
