Occupation: Cinematographer

What attracted you to the Entertainment Industry, and what was your first job or big break in the business?
Ideas and film's ability to reach/touch people attracted me to the entertainment industry. My first job was fixing lights for LTM Corp.- an HMI manufacturing company.

What is the biggest challenge you faced trying to break into the industry, and how did you overcome it?
The biggest challenge was surviving financially while working on every low budget production that came my way. My wife working helped greatly.

What advice can you give those trying to break into the "industry?"
Work on every production you can; become adept at every job you're interested in.

Please describe your job for those who might not know what a Cinematographer or D.P. is.
A Cinematographer or D.P. usually interprets the story. Practically speaking, I light, choreograph the camera movements and communicate to all departments what needs to happen visually for each shot.

Can you share any tricks of the trade that help you work faster/cheaper/better?
Knowledge of ones job helps to work faster/cheaper/better. No tricks come to mind.

Please illustrate the way the performance of your position can help or hurt a movie. Name a movie that you've seen (or worked on) that we could view and understand the difference between a good job and a bad job.
Caleb Deschanel's performance on "The Black Stallion" solidly helped the film's message.

What's the best lesson you've learned in regards to working in Hollywood?
Don't smile and say "yes" when you don't believe it.

What advice would you give to writers on how to craft a script that addresses practical production issues?
Set the tone or mood by choosing a location suitable for the scene.

What advice would you give a director on how to make production easier?
Visually see the film/movie in your head prior to getting on set; then be able to communicate this on a per shot basis. Speak in terms of each shot. Learn editing.
