Crew Bio
Name: Andrew
Hometown: Gary, IN
Occupation: Gaffer

What is the biggest challenge you faced trying to break into the industry, and how did you overcome it?
The biggest challenge I faced was the perception that it is a "closed" industry. Persistence and a strong work ethic overcome all.

What advice can you give those trying to break into the "industry?"
Take any job you can get. Work hard, pay attention, be quiet, humble and quick. Let the people above you be the genius. No one cares what you think.

Please describe your job for those who might not know what a Gaffer is.
The Gaffer is the Chief Electrician. The position requires extensive knowledge of film concepts, lighting and rigging. Management and people skills are paramount. The Gaffer physically lights the set. He/she manages a crew that actually makes a cloudy day sunny, or daytime night.

Can you share any tricks of the trade that help you work faster/cheaper/better?
Cheap, fast and good? You must pick two.

What advice would you give to writers on how to craft a script that addresses practical production issues?
Think practically. Write a script that can actually be produced with the resources at your disposal, or write a script so good that you can sell it.

What advice would you give a director on how to make production easier?
Be prepared. Get people smarter than you.
