What attracted you to the Entertainment Industry, and what was your first job or big break in the business?
I did scouting for a John Hughes film. They were desperate and I am a still photographer, so I was able to make photos for the location folders. Basically, fell into it.
What is the biggest challenge you faced trying to break into the industry, and how did you overcome it?
When I tried to find work, I didn't. When I met people who were involved, I fell into work.
What advice can you give those trying to break into the "industry?"
Get the names of people working and try to get advice/information from them. Offer to help/intern with them.
Please describe your job for those who might not know what a Location Manager is.
I read the script and talk with the director to establish initial visualization of the scenes. Through a group effort these locations are picked, and then I negotiate the use of the building/location for the film. Then we work on permits, talking with the neighbors/area businesses, working with the city government and services. I am also the film diplomat smoothing over anything.
Can you share any tricks of the trade that help you work faster/cheaper/better?
Communicate with everyone. Be diplomatic, and sometimes BEG.
Are you a writer, and if so, how many screenplays have you written?
No.
What's the best lesson you've learned in regards to working in Hollywood?
Haven't. Only worked in Chicago.
What advice would you give a director on how to make production easier?
Communicate consistently with your crew about what you'd like, and be flexible as much as you can. Pete Jones is a very good example.
