What attracted you to the Entertainment Industry, and what was your first job or big break in the business?
After I received my License of Cosmetology, my first goal was to work on a "rock tour;" that came true 5 years later. I was the sole hair/make-up for 14 artists on a 6-month tour.
What is the biggest challenge you faced trying to break into the industry, and how did you overcome it?
I quickly noticed I needed a "glimmer" or could not be "run of the mill" and not to limit myself. I needed to be knowledgeable in many aspects of hairdressing and make-up.
What advice can you give those trying to break into the "industry?"
Your personality should be a such:
1. You really want to do this - (take risks/ be persistent).
2. You don't mind chaotic situations (go w/ the flow).
3. You love actors (you want them to look their best).
4. You get along very well with people as a whole.
5. And most important - Study Your Craft!
Please describe your job for those who might not know what a Key Make-up Artist is.
I apply the make-up for the actors dictated by the needs of the film and actors after having discussed details with the Director, Director of Photography and the actors themselves. I detail continuity through Polaroids, notes, "touch-ups," and I maintain "looks" throughout the course of the long hours. Also, I apply special effects, i.e. bruises, cuts, tears, illnesses, sunburns, tans, hives, etc... I do anything the camera sees on the skin.
Can you share any tricks of the trade that help you work faster/cheaper/better?
I have an airbrush machine for quick body makeup or special effects. I'm into skincare; beautiful skin means easy application and less time covering up. Have a portable lighted mirror.
Please illustrate the way the performance of your position can help or hurt a movie. Name a movie that you've seen (or worked on) that we could view and understand the difference between a good job and a bad job.
Any time the makeup distracts from the storyline is bad.
