Episode 3 : Paper Trail
The Infamous Chris Moore Memo
Download 69 kb PDF
Here it is -- the memo referenced in the March 22nd conference call which prompted Ben Affleck to chide, "Do not be alarmed by this memo." You know you are dying to read the personal reasons why "this is not the movie [Chris] signed up to make." Does Chris let his emotions get the best of him in his memos? More importantly, do you think the memo helped or hurt the production team?

Pete Jones' 1976 vs 2000 Memo
Download 322 kb PDF
Maybe you feel Miramax should give Pete the extra money to shoot his movie in the glorious year of the bicentennial...but you're not exactly sure why. Find out how Pete feels the film "Chocolat" compares to his movie, in addition to reading some pretty convincing arguments for keeping "Stolen Summer" a period piece.

LivePlanet Memo Re: Production Compromises 3/20
Download 304 kb PDF
Miramax has asked Chris Moore, Pat Peach, and Jeff Balis to make a list of the things they will need to change to make "Stolen Summer" for $1 million dollars. Read this rather long list of creative and production concessions, and you might begin to understand why Pete Jones over-utilizes the phrase "over my dead body."

LivePlanet Memo Re: Shooting Days 4/10
Download 346 kb PDF
It's time we all got started on a new battle. Let's call it the "Aidan / shooting schedule debacle." Aidan Quinn is attempting to do Pete Jones and his film a favor by holding out for more days of shooting. Miramax needs some time to think it over. In this memo, Pat Peach and Jeff Balis spell out the financial implications for the Miramax execs and hope (in vain) for a speedy reply. Read the following series of memos and watch the sparks fly.

LivePlanet Memo Re: 20 Day 3.4 Week Schedule 4/10
Download 99 kb PDF
A 20 day shooting schedule means the team will have a six-day workweek and must shoot the film in just under four weeks. Already seem like a daunting task? Keep in mind two of the lead characters are child actors who can't shoot for more than 4.5 hours a day. Read the following list of assumptions made regarding this aggressive schedule and let us know if movie making is still the biz for you.

LivePlanet Memo Re: 20 Day 4 Week Schedule 4/10
Download PDF
Can 0.6 of a week really make that big of a difference? Compare and contrast the 3.4 with the 4 week schedule and you might begin to understand why Aidan Quinn pushes for 25 days of shooting with a five day workweek. At the end of Episode 3, we are left wondering whether or not Miramax will give Pete the five extra days. Let the battle for Aidan continue.

LivePlanet Memo Re: Aidan Quinn
Download 305 kb PDF
Aidan has many "real concerns." Read this "URGENT!" memo from Chris, Pat and Jeff entitled "Hard Deadlines Arrived," and find out why there is also great concern among the producers of "Stolen Summer." Is Miramax the "faceless penny-pinching villain" or has director Pete Jones become a petulant, whiny brat who should be more thankful for the opportunity he has been given? Maybe it's neither. Maybe it's both. You decide.

Pete's List of Chicago Freebies
Download 61 kb PDF
Pete's story is better told (and he's more secure) on location in Chicago. It doesn't hurt that he's got some friends in Deerfield (his hometown) and can get certain things for free (or at least for a discount). How much can he knock off the budget with these elements and do you think this had any affect on Miramax's decision to let him film in Chicago?
