Episode 4 : Paper Trail
Local Casting Hires

It makes sense to hire actors and actresses who live in the city in which one plans to shoot. From the Chicago Casting Center comes this list of native Chi-town actors and actresses who will help to round out the Stolen Summer cast list...but don't expect to find Margaret on this list.

Panic-stricken and desperate, our first time director is three days away from principal photography and still no Margaret. Who else had yet to be cast this close to the wire?

Cast Member Workday Schedule

A workday schedule outlines which days each cast member works during a shoot. Here is a key to help you figure this one out:

SW - START WORK (1st day of shooting)
W - WORK
WF - FINISH (last day of shooting)
H - HOLD (actor not working but must be available should they get called last minute)
R - REHEARSAL
T - TRAVEL
D - DROP
P - PICK UP (To avoid paying actors/actresses for "hold days" they are "dropped & picked up" if they do not work for at least 10 days in a row.)

Art Department Memo Re: Prep and Wrap

If you are a production designer prepping for a film (like Devorah Herbert) you would write a memo to your Location Manager (Amy Clarke) detailing how long it would take to construct or prepare each location for shooting as well as deconstruct and clean it up afterwards. Here is how you might format your own prep and wrap list before you go out on your next big shoot.

In addition to the prep and wrap list, the production designer must also provide a detailed list to the location manager explaining what goes and what stays for each of the locations. Ideally, you want your locations to need as little fussing over as possible. Because "Stolen Summer" is a period piece set in 1976 the likelihood of finding a house where most of the items would work for the film was low. Devorah seems to have approved, however, of the pillows in Joe and Margaret's bedroom.

List of Shooting Locations

As you know, "Stolen Summer" was shot on location in and around Chicago. Weeks before photography begins, everyone must start thinking about where it makes sense to shoot as well as what fits into the budget. Typically, the location list is established during prep with the help of many players including art department, the director, various location scouts, managers, producers, and a sound engineer. In episode 5 you will learn why one should ALWAYS budget for taking a sound engineer along when finalizing any location for a movie.
