New Scoop, Unofficial Greenlight Parties, Message Boards
December 11, 2000
Dear Greenlighters,
Just a message to update you on three important new developments in the Greenlight community: the new "Scoop" section on the website, a note about your upcoming unofficial "Greenlight" parties, and a reminder about conduct on the message boards.
THE NEW SCOOP
Starting December 8, 2000, there is a new and improved "Scoop" section on the Greenlight homepage. (The Scoop section is the middle area of the homepage where the "Fade In" and "Fade Out" letters from Chris Moore have been located since the beginning of the Contest.) From now on, important notices about the Contest and related Greenlight issues will appear in this new Scoop section, in reverse chronological order, and identified by topic and date posted. So, for example, you'll find this post listed on the Scoop as "New Scoop, Unofficial Greenlight Parties, and Message Boards" and dated 12/11/00. We're sending you the whole thing by email this time, just to announce the new location, but from now on, we intend to put our important messages to you only on the Scoop, so please check it every time log you on. This way, we won't have to send everyone an email every time we have something important to announce, and we can avoid those pop-up windows you all love so much. So please use the Scoop, and make it part of your regular Greenlight routine.
UNOFFICIAL GREENLIGHT PARTIES
We're thrilled by the overwhelming response to Greenlight, and word has it that Greenlight parties are now popping up all over the country, including a big national bash this past weekend in Los Angeles. Remember that, as we stated in earlier posts on the Greenlight message boards, these parties are unofficial Greenlight gatherings, and in order to ensure fairness in the administration of the Contest and for other legal reasons, we won't be sponsoring or attending them, and we don't endorse them or participate in any way in their planning or execution. Nevertheless, we wanted to make sure everyone knows how excited we are to see this community really coming together!
As we also mentioned earlier, folks from the Greenlight community are free to shoot video of the party, and we'll consider potentially using that video in the upcoming HBO television series covering the Project Greenlight Contest. See our earlier posts on the message boards about important things to consider in shooting your video, and remember that we will not look at any video until after the Contest winner is selected, so please don't send us any video until we ask (if you do, we'll have to discard it). One other thing -- although persons affiliated with LivePlanet, Miramax, and HBO won't be attending any of the parties, we might send around an independent camera crew to one or two of the unofficial parties, just to get some special footage for the HBO series. If we do send out a crew, remember that the crew will be an independent third party that has nothing to do with the operation of the Contest, and that none of the crew members will be from LivePlanet, Miramax, or HBO. Any camera crew we send out will ask anyone appearing on film or video to sign a basic publicity release so the footage can be used later; and, in order to avoid bias or favoritism toward any advancing Contestant, the crew will be under strict instructions not to make the film available to the Contest judges until after the Contest winner is selected. That's it -- we hope you have a great time at your Greenlighters' events -- be safe and have fun!
MESSAGE BOARDS
This also seems like a good time to remind everyone that the conduct of all visitors to the Greenlight message boards is governed by our Terms and Conditions, accessible through a link at the bottom of each page of the Greenlight site. In our Terms and Conditions, we have set forth a Code of Conduct that we expect all Greenlight members to abide by. We encourage everyone to re-read the Code of Conduct. In plain English, though -- please play nice on the message boards, and remember that your fellow Greenlighters deserve your consideration and respect. We have received a number of complaints about specific posts in which abusive, threatening, offensive, indecent, and hostile language predominates, and, in some cases, in which such language was directed at specific individuals. Until this point, we have used sparingly our right to disqualify Contestants, or to prohibit individual access to the site, for violations of the Code of Conduct. However, from today forward, we will begin taking a more aggressive approach to Code of Conduct violations.
Please note that the Code of Conduct also prohibits deceiving or attempting to deceive others by using a fake or "spoof" username. For the information of all Greenlight Members, there are only two official moderators on the message boards: TechSupport and GREENLIGHT. Any other individual purporting to be a message board moderator is not authentic and is not authorized by Project Greenlight. If we decide to add new moderators, you will be able to tell if they're authorized by us simply by looking at their member description underneath the username, which will be listed as "Moderator" for all official Greenlight moderators. In addition, as many of you know, the Member and/or Junior Member usernames of ChrisMoore, BenAffleck, and MattDamon are, indeed, the real Chris, Ben, and Matt. Any other usernames purporting to represent Chris, Ben, or Matt (or any one related to or affiliated with any of them) -- including usernames that are similar but appear in all capital letters, or all in lowercase letters, or that use a zero in place of the letter "O" and so on -- are not authentic. To the best of our knowledge, no username that replicates the actual name of other well-known producers, screenwriters, directors, actors, or other industry professionals, is authentic.
The best part about Project Greenlight is you -- the Greenlight community. You have taken our idea and turned it into a wonderful space for writers to talk about writing and making movies. We don't want to prevent people from speaking their minds, but we do take seriously the Code of Conduct, which was designed to help build a community of kindred spirits who share a common love of screenwriting and film, with mutual respect for each other's talents, abilities, and individuality. We'll do our best to help you preserve the community spirit on the message boards. We encourage each of you to do your part by adhering to the Code of Conduct, and by giving those who violate the Code of Conduct exactly the opposite of what they want -- no response. If you want to let us know about any particular post or situation, please send an email to greenlight@projectgreenlight.com, or to techsupport@projectgreenlight.com.
Thanks again for your participation -- as always, we're thrilled to be making a movie with you!
Sincerely,
Project Greenlight
